Kia unveils the innovative PV5 electric midsize van for diverse needs

Kia's PV5 electric van promises flexibility and customization for various uses.

Introduction to the Kia PV5

Kia has recently made waves in the automotive industry by unveiling the PV5, an electric midsize van, during a special presentation at Kia EV Day in Tarragona, Spain. This exciting reveal also included the Concept EV2 subcompact crossover and the production-ready EV4 compact sedan and hatchback. The PV5 marks the beginning of Kia’s ambitious lineup of Platform Beyond Vehicles (PBVs), which are specifically designed to meet the unique needs of customers, including delivery vans and shuttles.

Versatility and Customization

The PV5 is set to offer both passenger and commercial versions, with the potential for additional derivatives through proper upfitting. This means that businesses and individuals alike can tailor the vehicle to their specific requirements. A rugged version of the PV5, aimed at overlanding enthusiasts, was showcased in concept form at the 2024 SEMA show, hinting at the brand’s commitment to versatility.

In terms of design, the passenger version of the PV5 features a single lift-up tailgate, while the cargo variant opts for conventional split rear doors, lacking the extra windows found on the passenger model. This thoughtful design approach ensures that the PV5 can cater to a wide range of customer preferences and needs.

Advanced Technology and Performance

At the heart of the PV5 is a unique version of Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform, specifically tailored for PBVs. This variant, known as E-GMP.S, allows for greater flexibility in combining various vehicle body types. Standardized key components, such as batteries and motors, are at the core of this innovative system.

Potential buyers of the PV5 will have the option to choose between two battery sizes: 51.5 kWh and 71.2 kWh. Additionally, the PV5 Cargo model will feature a smaller 43.3 kWh battery, perfect for last-mile deliveries. All configurations come equipped with a single front-mounted motor rated at 161 horsepower, providing a maximum estimated range of 248 miles on the WLTP test cycle. However, a lower range is expected under the stricter EPA test cycle.

Space and Future Prospects

Despite its compact chassis measuring just 175 inches in length, the passenger version of the PV5 can accommodate three rows of seats, while the cargo model offers an impressive 180 cubic feet of storage volume. For those seeking even more space, Kia has teased a larger PV7 concept at the 2024 CES, which stretches over 207 inches in length, further expanding the possibilities for electric vans.

Kia’s commitment to innovation doesn’t stop with the PV5. The automaker has also confirmed plans to launch a PBV specifically designed for taxi services, based on the popular Niro compact crossover. This move highlights Kia’s dedication to expanding its electric vehicle lineup to meet diverse mobility needs.

Sales of the PV5 are set to begin in Europe and Asia in the latter half of the year, with additional markets anticipated in 2026. However, Kia has yet to confirm whether the U.S. will be among these new markets. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the PV5 stands as a testament to Kia’s forward-thinking approach and commitment to sustainability.
